A Degree of Difference

Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism – the only Ivy League journalism school – provides journalists with a unique opportunity to hone and deepen their skills at any point in their careers.

For nearly 100 years, the Journalism School has been preparing journalists in a program that stresses academic rigor, ethics, journalistic inquiry and professional practice. Our mission is to give students tools that will guide them over the long term as journalists. This includes, first and foremost, intensive individual coaching in reporting and writing provided by the nationally renowned journalists on our faculty.

The Graduate School of Journalism offers two master’s degrees in journalism and a Ph.D. in communications. We encourage students to use the university's remarkable resources, including the highest level of instruction and research available.

Master of Science :
The 10-month M.S. program offers aspiring and experienced journalists the opportunity to study the skills, the art, and the ethics of journalism by reporting and writing stories that range from short news pieces to complex narrative features.

The journalism school attracts some of the finest journalists in the country to serve on their faculty. Since most class sizes are limited to 16 or fewer, students work closely with their professors. Nationally known journalists are often at the school on a daily basis and are welcomed as speakers in classrooms and lectures, adding breadth of knowledge to the faculty’s broad experience.

They also offer the Columbia Publishing Course, which is a certificate program, as well as the Punch Sulzberger Executive Leadership Program.
