See, it is a matter of scale or scope - with caste-based reservation the scope of checking and verification and misuse is a lot less than in the case of income-based reservation. Income based reservation will be more damaging than caste based reservation - simply because of the scale involved (and given the pathetic state of govt. affairs in our country). We have a lot more people in total as compared to people belonging to SC/ST/OBC. Now which is more manageable - the whole lot or a section of it?
