Bharat Ratna

Two names that have been bandied about in the recent past for Bharat Ratna are those of Sachin Tendulkar and Amitabh Bachchan. While Sachin has not said anything himself, Amitabh has said that he did not think he was fit for this. In a country where there have been such illustrious people who have taken enormous pains to improve the quality of life of people around them, in a country where ascetics have dedicated their lives to provide whatever little succour they could provide to those not very well placed, or in a country where there is so much to do other than playing cricket and acting in films and get moolahs in return, should the talk of Bharat Ratna veer around a sportsman and a filmstar? Don't we have people in our country who have done so much to improve the life of people? Where are they who brought milk revolution? Where are they who brought IT revolution? Anna created an ideal village in Ralegaon. He changed for better the quality of life there. Do you remember a man of Gaya in Bihar who devoted years in making a hole through a hill to create a new road for people? Don't you think they are better Ratnas than those who played and acted and made lots of money? One of them made so much money that in a house he recently bought for Rs. 39 crore he could park 50 cars. What an achievement really! Should our Bharat Ratnas be like these? Just take a look at the Bharat Ratnas we already have, you'll get the answer. And if you still do not get one, find one for yourself.
