Subject :: Corruption and lack of administration at Swami Ramanand Teerth Rural Government Medical College, Ambajogai, Maharashtra

Respected faculty,

I painfully want to convey to you the increasing level of corruption at afore mentioned medical college. Sir, here at my medical college everyone is corrupt from the dean to his staff. They have a local political support and now that the number of seats have been doubled they have a lot of money to feed on. They are what is wrong with the health care system. We are not taught in this medical college. Students have passed out without even attending a single day in their whole MBBS.

Following are some on the facts regarding this institute. :-

1. The staff exists only on paper.
- The staff only exists on paper.
- Example; Wife of a doctor working at our hospital is presented as a House Officer in the surgery department (Interestingly! She is a diploma in clinical pathology).
2. Dean takes half the money from “the on paper staff”:
- The members of the staff on paper are paid not to come at the college, just their name is used for which they are paid half the salary and half is enjoyed by our dean.
- Example; Dr. Gughe(an MD Medicine) – We have never seen him but, he is an associate professor on papers.
3. Undergraduates have to pay to be passed in final MBBS, Medicine practicals:
- Final year students have to pay a sum of Rs. 5000/- each to DR. Chavan to pass their final year exam. Dr. Chavan is a permanent member of the medicine department and all this happens under the HOD Dr. Birajdar.
- PG’s have to pay 50,000/- to pass their final practical.
4. MCI is fooled:
- When members from the MCI come for an inspection; a prior information regarding the same is conveyed such that everything is managed.
- Also, interns are introduced as residents during the Operation Theatre visits and otherwise.
5. Lack of amenities to students:
- There is no staff to teach us, when we go for postings we are kicked out, sometimes made fun of.
- No clinic room for teaching undergraduates in Depts. like medicine and surgery. We are only taught in OBGY and Paediatrics in final year.
- We are not taught even a single word in Medicine and Surgery, there are no clinics and no lectures.
6. Hospital is in a very bad shape:
- For most of the time there is no water in the hospital to wash hands.
- Non-sterile instruments are used on patients.
- Many contract based doctors (ex. Dr. Nitin Chate, AP, Surgery) refers patients to his private clinic stating that it will take a lot of time here; you just pay me “5,000-10,000” and you’ll be operated today itself.
- Many patients are prescribed medicines and investigations from outside the hospital on commission basis.
- Pigs and donkeys roam about in our campus.

Please sir help us – if this is the way you want us to be doctors, we will be. But, this is the reason why the standard of medical education is declining. We want to help the people, it kills me to see such a condition of a government institute.

“Instead of increasing the number of doctors, please improve the quality of doctors”

I hope you’ll be able to help. I don’t trust the system but, just wanted to give it a try if someone might want to listen and help this country.
