Tackling corruption in the political class
I have a suggestion to make to tackle corruption and acquiring assets disproportionate to known sources of income. Income Tax department should create a separate division all over India to deal with the Income tax returns of those members of various political parties who have certain positions which give them opportunities to make money through illegal means. The returns should be scrutinised every year. Those who have not submitted returns should be sent a questionnaire asking for information to verify whether they were justified in not submitting the returns. Vigorous follow up in the matter would make it difficult for them to indulge in corruption and make illegitimate gains. I understand that the officials may be intimidated and subjected to political pressure. This has to be taken care of by appointing suitable officials and backing them up through suitable safeguards. My suggestion could be fine tuned and made pucca so that it becomes workable. Shri Kejriwal, who was himself an IRS officer, would be able to do this. We could afford to create a good many posts since the additional revenue generated would more than compensate the expenditure in the additional staff and the infrastructure required. Please consider the suggestion.
