Accountability

The issue at hand is one of accountability.

While there is a written Constitution, and a protector of the Constitution (the President of India), there has been a systemic failure on several fronts, the executive, the legislative and the judiciary.

The Constitution was created by humans, with (presumably) the best of intents.

However, the stark reality is that today’s problems are partly due to failure to uphold the Constitution, and partly due to the watering down of the Constitution.

It was bound to happen, sooner or later, that the common man understood the he/she was being taken for a ride.

Merely allowing a vote, is not the definition of democracy. The main features of democracy are
a) The ability to elect a person of our choice
b) The upholding of our Constitutional rights
c) Accountability

On the election front, people have been misled/coerced in several ways, by just about every political party.

It is predominantly, the lesser of the several evils, that the common man has to choose from.

Of course, there also has been deliberate manipulation of the vote by philandering to the people, in more than one manner.

The Congress assumed the role of liberators, and has emotionally blackmailed the nation since the “day of liberation”.

There were countless unnamed heroes in the battle of independence.

The BJP has almost split the nation on the grounds of Hindutva.

The Communists promised power to the common man, but reaped a rich harvest with its sickle.

The DMK/AIDMK are vying for the most corrupt party.

The list goes on, but this should suffice.

When a person approaches any office or institution, public or private, the first question almost invariably raised is the eliteness status of the visitor. This is a legacy of the British Raj.

200 odd years of slavery takes a heavy toll, and the hangover of subservience lasts for generations.

That hangover is now gone.

This generation of youth, does not suffer from the hangover of subservience.

All political parties must recognize and accept the fact that democracy in India has reached the second phase.

There is simply no going back.
