Post Individual dictates must not weaken democratic process: Rahul

August 26, 2011 2:58:37 PM

PTI | New Delhi

Disapproving of Anna Hazare's hunger strike, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today said democratic processes should not be weakened by "individual dictates" which could set dangerous precedent and rejected the belief that Lokpal alone would eradicate corruption.

Breaking his silence, he said a political will and a comprehensive framework would be required to fight the menace and suggested a "game changing idea" of creating a Constitutional institution of Lokpal like the Election Commission accountable to Parliament.

Gandhi, speaking during Zero Hour in Lok Sabha, agreed that "corruption is pervasive" which operates at "every level" but warned that there was a "risk" that an unaccountable Lokpal "might itself become corrupt".

Referring to the anti-corruption campaign of Hazare, he said it has "helped the people to articulate" their disillusionment and "I thank him for that".

At the same time, he warned "individual dictates, no matter how well-intentioned, must not weaken the democratic process. A tactical incursion, divorced from the machinery of an elected government that seeks to undo the checks and balances created to protect the supremacy of Parliament sets a dangerous precedent for a democracy.

"Today, the proposed law is against corruption. Tomorrow, the target may be something less universally heralded. It may attack the plurality of our society and democracy."

As his sister Priyanka watched from the visitors' gallery, Gandhi's speech was disrupted by NDA members, protesting against his making a statement on the issue during Zero Hour.

This triggered heated exchanges with Congress members shouting back. Speaker Meira Kumar ruled that she had allowed Gandhi to speak, after which he continued his speech.

"Lets examine elected politicians"

"Gentle men ! Baby speaks elected gov. or elected representative some what lets us examine elected politicians . I want to make a humble request before each person (who has elected these politicians) to clearify his/her views about public demand "Jan lokpal bill" at the open roads. The persons opposing "Jan lokpal" will be highly appreciated by me. The numbers of the opposers will decide the actual position whether this is elected government or elected representative. Hon'ble Anna's team mate have already seek the public views from some representative areas. Pulic pole has already cleared about the position( these were elected / not are elected) .........."keep silent mom is outdoor"
"These are my peronel view ask sorry if any one feels hearted"

Dear Mr Rahul Gandhi,

Please consider this as my official resignation letter from the youth congress of which you are a leader. I am appalled and ashamed by the statements you made in the parliament today. I was hoping being a part of Youth Congress I was serving this great nation but to my dismay it awakens me today to see that I am just serving you and your family's interests. The Jan Lokpal Bill is a legitimate demand from the people of India, its not a dictate from one person its a plea from all the citizens of India whom you seem to be disconnected now.

I am left with very little choices to change the state of the nation but I will serve India Against Corruption Movement from hereon and promote the knowledge and awareness of a corruption free India to the rest of the True Blood Indians. Your silence was golden but since your speech you nudged me further to take this step. My conscience does not allow me to stand by and watch the wrong doings of the congress party and conniving politics that's being played out in the parliament since the last four days. Please accept my resignation so that I can redeem the good that is left in me. At the least I won't be associated with a party that's standing against the future of India and its citizens.

Sincerely,

A honest Citizen of India &
Ex-Youth Congress Member.

One question to all of you, initially was Anna was stating that he will give up his fast once Govt agrees to table JanLokpal bill on parliament, now when govt agreed he is adding coditions to pass a resolution only then he will withdraw. Dont get shocked tomorrow based on his antharathma or based on the suggestions of his key aides, Anna might extend his fast for some more conditions. Keep Supporting his blindly. A true leader is one who tells something and does something different.
