Post IAC Update: Bhaiyyu Maharaj anticipates Lokpal Bill will be passed in Winter Session

Indore: Spiritual leader Bhaiyyu Maharaj, who played a prominent role in breaking the deadlock between Anna Hazare and the government, on Tuesday said he was confident the Lokpal Bill's version with three conditions stressed by the Gandhian, will be passed in Parliament's Winter Session.

"The three main demands that Annaji put up could not be passed in the current Monsoon Session of Parliament due to short sittings and I am very much confident that the resolution adopted by all MPs cutting across party lines, would be passed in the shape of a final bill by it in Winter Session," Bhaiyyu Maharaj said on the sidelines of his felicitation organised by the Indore Press Club here.

Referring to the Parliament adopting a resolution on the three sticking points put forth by the 74-year-old anti-graft crusader, Bhaiyyu Maharaj said, "This was the big achievement that there was a political consensus arrived over the Lokpal resolution and by all means it would get through in Parliament."

In the backdrop of reports of "paint-up anger" within the Congress party over handling of the entire issue, the spiritual leader heaped praises on Rahul Gandhi and the government managers namely Kapil Sibal, Salman Khurshid and Pranab Mukherjee.

"There (the ministers') attitude was very much positive and they played their technical, legal and constitutional role very effectively to maintain the dignity of democracy and constitution," Udai Singh Deshmukh, popularly known as Bhaiyyu Maharaj, said.

All the three ministers were working in coordination under the leadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he said, adding since Congress President Sonia Gandhi was convalescing after surgery, Rahul played a very positive role in the process of final resolution.

On the recent controversy surrounding Swami Agnivesh, the 43-year-old spiritual leader said, "We have to trust each other and should not doubt on each other's role."

Asked about the demands of 'Right to Recall' and 'Right to Reject', Bhaiyyu Maharaj said the suggestions have always been open for debate.

"I am very much confident that our prime minister has got high standard of character, honesty, dedication and intention to move towards a corruption-less society," he said.

Condemning Hazare's brief arrest on August 16, he said the activist should have been kept in a respected guest house instead of Tihar Jail.

Explaining the strategy adopted by him to break the ice between the Gandhian and government, the spiritual leader said he did so by kindling effective communication between the two sides.

"I maintained transparency and positive attitude between two sides by shedding self ego to end the deadlock between Team Anna and government... I tried to break 'samvadheenata' (non-communication) of ideas and suggestions on proposed Jan Lokpal," he added.
