Some things do change, just look at recent cut off marks for law courses in Tamil Nadu.


Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University BL Degree Admission Chennai, Aug 6: Dalit students will have to score more marks than those belonging to the Backward and Most Backward Classes to gain admission to the five-year BL degree course offered by the Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University this year.


The cut-off marks are: OC - 83.12, SC -77.50, BC - 67.62, MBC - 64,37 and ST -45. Besides that, of the 306 seats under OC category, 152 seats have been cornered by SC students. “It is quite surprising” says a top administrator in the university.


Till last year, admission to the B.L degree was based on marks scored in the entrance exam. This year, only the Plus Two (12 th standard) marks count, as the entrance examination has been scrapped by the government.
While 187 students have been chosen under the SC quota of 18 percent, the university received 1,561 applications from SC student out of the total 2,745 applications this year.

Just want to clarify from you, does receiving applications mean that SC applicants have the requisite cut off marks… guess it is. Good for them!
Although I don’t have the figures, this has been the trend for some years in Karnataka too, many SC students get into engineering/medical colleges with marks falling within the ‘merit’ list.
This blog is a little less about the progress made by SC’s. It is about dalits, the ones that are not able to move in a like manner as the upwardly mobile SC’s. Why is it still 45% marks cut off for certain dalits, is one question?
What motivates us to search for reasons…..why there are dalits (large numbers) who did NOT enter the education system at all. And will not for a long time……….unless these remarkable numbers that you quote, emerge as ‘agents of change’ and channel their energies to change it, with thoughts and actions. - (quoting Anu).
