Devisingh Shekhawat favours women's quota
Kurukshetra (Haryana) (PTI): President Pratibha Patil's husband Devisingh Ramsingh Shekhawat has favoured reservation for women in legislatures and Parliament.
Delivering his inaugural address at a national seminar on 'Women's Reservation in India' at Kurukshetra University here last evening, he said there were just 45 women in the 542 member Lok Sabha and only 28 in the Rajya Sabha, which has a total of 242 members.
"There are some women working as the chief ministers today and have been so in the past too. But that is a meagre figure," Shekhawat said.
"The political parties demand 33 per cent reservation for women but the bill to this effect is still pending in the highest body of legislation. It has become a hype of electioneering only. All political parties lack strong will power for reservation of women in legislative bodies, but most of them support caste-based movements for reservations," he rued.
