the anna hazare movement

The Anna Hazare-led mass movement is an event of great historical significance. It is the first time that well- educated, relatively well-off, young persons and others have come out in the open for a cause. It is interesting to note that leadership for the young articulate class is being provided by an old-style Gandhian.

In the past, poor and illiterate people have been brought together by politicians to form a crowd. Upper classes did come out on the road during the anti-Mandal agitation, but that was a feeble attempt to protect their class/caste interests. This movement is a genuine nationalist movement which represents the sense of outrage permeating the whole nation against brazen and high-magnitude corruption.

The Lokpal bill victory is significant, because it has compelled the Government to seek legitimacy from the masses. We must however keep in mind that influencing the draft of a Parliamentary bill is no revolution. There is need for a sustained movement. While we all wish Anna Hazare long and healthy life, it is clear that second and third lines of leadership need to be built.

Indian governments since globalization have patted themselves on the back for maintaining a reasonably high growth rate and creating an India-shining generation. This generation has so far been self-centred and self-absorbed. In fact, as the country's economy has become more and more derivative so has the new culture. This phenomenon can be seen in the content and tone of our electronic and print media.

The real success of Hazare's movement will be the emergence of a pro-active civil society led by younger people.

Postscript.By the time the Lokpal bill is passed and made effective, the present Chief Justice of the Supreme Court would probably have retired. He will be ideal as India's Lokpal.
