Are elected representatives really elected ?

Initially when respected Anna sat on fast on 05th April, one of the spokesperson of the major political party of the UPA 2 which is in power vehemently opposed the inclusion of eminent persons from the civil society in the draft bill finalizing committee with the argument that only the elected representatives have the right to draft a legislation as they only have the mandate because they are the elected representatives of the people.
Here I would like to emphasize the term elected representatives very strongly put forward by the lawyer spokesperson for the fact that most of our elected representatives in parliament or state legislative assemblies are only legally elected representatives. In real terms most of them are rejected by the people, but because of the prevailing faults in our election system they are pronounced elected.
All will say how ? It is simply like this. Votes polled for contestant A is a rejection vote for all others contesting election from that constituency and listed on the Ballot paper.
Now if we consider the votes polled not in favour of the declared elected person as vote of rejection for him we will find most of our elected representatives are actually rejected by the people. Only those who win by more than 50% of the total votes polled can be considered as elected by the people.
We need to start a movement for election reforms also where we can define that only those who poll more than 50% of the total votes polled will be declared elected representatives. Rest all winning the elections should not be given full rights of a parliamentarian or a state legislator.
